My
Dad once told me that an acre of tobacco would make me a better person.
I would usually respond by telling him that, although I hated to disappoint
him, it probably did not get any better than this.
I think that my Granny must have overheard these conversations because
she retaliated by planting row after row of sweet corn. This would later
constitute a labor intensive, family affair that resulted in weeks full
of picking, hauling, and blanching sweet corn on Grannys porch
a task which no doubt left you hot, sticky, and terrorized by
the occasional worm.
We had three weeks of hard labor inspired solely by an ear of corn,
and it is ironic to me that so much time was spent lamenting over a
vegetable that no one in the family particularly cared for but
I have to remember that it was not time invested in corn as it was time
invested in me.
I am sure that my father would like to think that Granny planted these
rows of corn to teach me the valuable lesson that is only equivalent
to that which is apparently learned in the tobacco field. But I like
to think that she planted those rows of sweet corn for the same principle
that this business is based on
you see, it really isnt about
corn in its literal sense it is about the process the
experience.
It is about a sense of coming together to hear a great story that inspires
you to get up and do something with your life. It is about being excited
about change and new beginnings. It is about taking those moments on
my Grannys porch and realizing that she gave me a great talent
to find the humor in lifes situations and to use it to inspire
others after all, you cant have an Uncle Henry who carries
a grasshopper around in his pocket and not share THAT with everyone!
And maybe through my messages you will find that ha ha moment
in life. Or maybe you will be inspired to GET LOUD with your life and
alter your attitude
or perhaps, you will just have the chance to
remember some things that you may have forgotten as the years have past
for whatever reason, it is home grown comedy straight
from our front porch to you!
